Closing the Smart Board Gap at Taper Elementary

Most people assume classrooms already have modern, interactive technology.
Many don’t.
One of the defining upgrades in contemporary classrooms is the smart board. These interactive boards allow teachers to annotate in real time, pull up online content instantly, integrate video, save lesson notes, and adjust instruction on the fly. Instead of passive learning, students participate. They engage. They collaborate.
At Taper Elementary, there were 6 smart boards serving 32 teachers.
That meant most classrooms were still operating without this essential instructional tool.
Not because they are behind.
Because funding technology upgrades like this is difficult to secure through traditional public school channels.
Public funding covers the basics, but upgrades like classroom technology often fall into a gray area. Budgets are tight. Priorities compete. Grant funding is limited and highly restricted.
Recognizing the need, Taper Elementary applied for a grant through the San Pedro Education Foundation.
With community support, SPEF funded two additional smart boards.
Taper now has 8.
There are still 23 classrooms without one.
Two added.
23 to go.
A measurable gap.
And one we can close together.
