From Concrete to Green: A Transformation at Barton Hill Elementary

What was once a blank stretch of concrete at Barton Hill Elementary is now a vibrant green space, thanks to a grant from the San Pedro Education Foundation.

With the help of our generous donors, we turned a bare lot into something far more meaningful: a living, breathing field of grass—where kids now run, play, explore, and learn.

This isn’t just about aesthetics. The impact of green space on childhood development is powerful. Studies show that time spent on grass—rather than blacktop—sparks creativity, fuels curiosity, and supports critical thinking. Movement becomes natural and joyful. Emotional regulation improves. Kids become more engaged in their learning. Their focus sharpens. Their motivation grows. Simply put: children thrive when nature is part of their day.

At Barton Hill, we’re already seeing it. Students are more active. Teachers notice calmer classrooms. Recess has become not just a break, but a bridge to better learning.

This is what the San Pedro Education Foundation exists to do: create environments where students can flourish. Where schools get the support they need. And where concrete can become something much more.

Thank you for helping us grow something beautiful.
